If a strange event cannot be called up on demand then science refuses to believe it. As many of us know weird or unusual events just happen when we least expect them to. This is not something scientists can reproduce or take apart to see how it works. Scientists do not believe what they do not see. There is a certain logic to that way of thinking; but it is a very thin logic that hides many wonderful things that cannot be seen or reproduced on demand.

Halloween has come and gone again. I've been so busy I didn't have time or energy enough to plan much for it. I did get a few decorations in place before "beggars night". I trimed the front balcony with 12 pumpkins and a sign reading "Happy Halloween". I had a skeleton Butler standing at the front door greeting everyone (dressed in a tux with a red bow tie) three large pumpkins (jack o lanterns)and a big black cat on the largest pumpkin. Plus two standees of Elvira, one holding a jack-0-lantern and the other as a witch. The village idiots, oops, excuse me, city fathers saw fit to have Trick or treat on Friday when all the rest of the area was celebrating the event on Thursday. As a result we had a tremendous influx of ghosts and goblins from those other areas getting a second shot of trick or treating. Luckily I'm always pretty well prepared. I do not give out candy, I give out toys and weird stuff. For example I have folding binoculars that fit in your pocket and unfold at a moments notice. Actually they aren't bad; about 6X and with a sharp image. I have dozens of Ty critters, flash lights, etc. you get the picture. Anyway I gave out close to 500 items in a single hour long trick or treat. I was ran ragged. I understand a lot of my neighbors had to quit with-in a half hour, having run out of treats. So I got very few photos most of which I took before the gremlins arrived and a very few I shot after the event was over. I still haven't looked over the shots. A brief survey on the digital camera did not immediately reveal any strange artifacts. It is possible that once I print the shots something might turn up. I couldn't locate my film camera so nothing was shot on film. The first two years I shot pictures at Halloween on both the film and digital cameras I got some really puzzling artifacts something like the orbs you hear so much about, but the past two Halloweens have turned up zilch and I don't have high hopes for this year. But maybe next year, if I'm still able, I'll have more time to plan and less trick or treaters to deal with.

Hi Brig, I've got something really creepy to tell you... Several friends of mine were employed at a outdoor haunted house situated in the woods of Waterford Wisconsin. Several of the employees, especially on one specific day, complained about mysterious deep sharp scratches, 3 in a row on parts of their body. Several peoples were matching and they swore up and down that they did not feel the scratches at the time, but reported severe burning when they got home, and that they were wearing thermal clothing over all part of their body because the weather was cold that day. They cannot figure out what scratched them! Several of them said that they were attached by a ghost.

For some strange reason I did not see this post til today. Strange indeed. I have read in various books on the paranormal that such scratches are not felt at the time they happen. Some say the scratches are psychological, but then you need to explain how the mind could produce actual scratches on the body. Yet the mind does seem capable of a lot of strangeness.

I have neglected this thread for a while. Actually I lost the connection to this site on my computer and only recently made a new connection. A couple of strange events have occurred at my wife's store. Not so much here at the house. I did keep up the journal on Google. So if I miss anything here I can refer back and make corrections. Here at the house recently while I was working, in the library, at the computer the strangest grinding growl came out of the bookcase on the south wall which is only about 5 ft from where I sit at the computer. My older dog got up and barked at the noise. I have no idea what could have made the noise. There is nothing, at present, even near that bookcase of a mechanical nature, though I can't really describe the noise as necessarily mechanical in nature. In fact it is difficult to describe. But it certainly perturbed my dog. Week before last, on a Wednesday, I think, I was walking out of the kitchen, into the Dining room, intent on going into the library. My older dog was right at my side. My older dog loves stuffed toys; he is the only dog I have ever owned who does. His favorite toy, a brightly colored parrot was laying in the middle of the dining room floor. As we approached it, it let out a loud definite squeak. Neither of us had touched it in fact we were a good 6 ft from it. The squeeker bulb in the toy has to be depressed in order for it to squeak. No one was near it to depress the bulb. Just strange. Down at the store I have a four foot tall Howard Miller pendulum clock that I work on from time to time. It runs great for about 9 hours and stops. It should run almost a week at a time. I haven't worked out its problem as yet. It has a loud deep strike and plays chimes on the quarter hour. I hadn't worked on it in well over a month, in fact I had several other projects sitting around it that I was working on. I couldn't even get to it to wind it. Yet I was standing well away from it when it chimed the three-quarter hour. It had sit quietly for well over a month, pendulum stationary, and suddenly chimed the three-quarters hour. Again, interesting. The weather here has been terrible, snow, freezing rain and temperatures well below 0 at night. As a result my house had a frozen moat around it. My wife who suffers from leg problems was afraid to venture out on the ice to get to the car so that day I, alone, ran the store. I admit that by 5 o'clock I was pretty pooped. We hadn't had any customers after 4:30 so I was fairly certain the store was empty except for me. About 5 til 5:00pm I started around the store turning off lights; taking care of the til, etc. The large overhead lights are the last to be turned off. I had just finished everything but the overhead lights and was adjusting the curtain that separates the work area from the sales floor when I saw a large male with a heavy black overcoat coming down the main isle in the rear show room. I said, "Oh sorry sir, I thought everyone had left." I turned and finished pulling the curtain shut. That action would not have taken but a few seconds. When I turned toward the customer there was no one there. There is no way a person could have gone past me. There simply was no one in the store but me. and this brings us up to a really creepy episode. A friend of my wife's brought in two garishly costumed dolls. She wanted my wife to see if she could sell them for her. She said they were her husbands grandmothers dolls which he got after the grandmother died. She wanted to sell them because they gave her the creeps. I didn't pay much attention to the dolls. But my wife told me they gave her the creeps too. I never noticed the dolls much but later my wife told me she was ready to tell her friend to take the dolls back. I said "just what about them was so creepy?" My wife said it was the eyes, they seemed to follow you and she thought they were evil looking". I said "What happened to them?" Her reply was they finally sold. The lady that bought them was from Cleveland and as a little girl she always wanted those dolls but her Daddy couldn't win them, though he tried several times. The lady was excited to get them in such very good condition (even had the original boxes) and my wife was elated to get rid of them. Then my wife told me several tales about those dolls I was not aware of. I guess a lot of misplaced merchandise and totally unexplainable brakeage took place in their immediate vicinity. She called to mind a huge 40 or 50 lb cast iron old fashion wringer that fell off the top shelf. That wringer was tilted well backward on the wall yet it fell forward. On top of that my wife saw it happen. she said the wringer jumped up and fell forward. The wringer was directly across from the dolls. A woman had asked for a certain pattern curtain. We knew we had them but we could not find them. We practically tore the store apart looking for them. They were found, in plain sight in an otherwise large open basket just beneath those dolls. I know the basket was empty because my wife had asked me to take it back into the store room. I hadn't done it because we were looking for curtains. She said that as she was turning on the lights one morning that on the floor were lined up six red candles. The box they had been in was still where it belonged. Those candles were beneath those dolls. A candle globe was broken on the floor , but the candle and holder were still on the wall where they belonged. The globe would have had to be lifted off the candle which was still in its holder. Customers hadn't did this as these things were found of a morning before customers arrived. They didn't happen the night before, because we would have tripped over the candles and/or globe as we were shutting down for the night. So did we have haunted dolls? or a real series of coincidences? And my wife said, " We haven't had any problems in that area of the store since the dolls sold."

Here is one that really has me scratching my head. Yesterday at my wife's store; I was working in the workroom on an old Forestville wall or mantle clock. It was built between the years 1835 and 1839. They even have a picture of it on line. I got this clock at an auction at a very low price because it was in pieces. The cabinet was intact and looked good but the workings were all jumbled in the base of the cabinet. The clock face had to be removed so I could figure out the mechanics of the thing. When I removed the hands on the clock I very carefully placed them in a protected area of my work table. The clock is entirely brass except for the weights and the wire supporting them which are made of steel or cast iron. I was not familiar with the works, they were mostly large brass wheels which, luckily were still in place. It took some time to figure out what went where. Kid of like doing a jigsaw puzzle without a picture. The clock's weights are much heavier than typical grandfather clock weights and are raised and lowered with a winding key rather than being pulled on a chain like a grandfathers clock. Once I got the clockworks put together. It appeared all the parts were there. It also looked like it might run. So I retrieved the clock face and reattached it. But when I went to replace the clocks hands I discovered I only had the hour hand. The minute hand was missing. I knew where I had put the hands, both together, but only the hour hand was still there. I looked the work table over from one end to the other, I looked on the floor all around the work table; no minute hand. I was frustrated, no end. That minute hand was 176 or so years old and I knew blamed well I could not replace it. I knew it was close to closing time for the store so I went into my modern supply of clock hands and looked for something that might fit so I could try out the clock. I found a minute hand that would fit (kind of) though it looked totally out of place. I started the clock and wonder of wonders it ran. It was a very loud. low. deep. strike. I checked around the work table a second time looking for the missing minute hand and still no luck. We closed up the store (clock was still running) and went home. This morning at about 10 am we reopened the store for the day. When I checked on the clock I was pleasantly surprised to see it still running but it was way slow. This, in itself is correctable by simply rising the pendulum disk. But to my utter amazement laying directly in front of the clock; so obvious no one could miss it, was the missing minute hand. Only my wife and I have keys to the place. There was absolutely no minute hand there yesterday. I had looked in the area in front of the clock numerous times looking for that minute hand. Where was it? Where did it come from? Do we have mice? gremlins?, ghosts? Explain this one to me. I have absolutely no explanation for it? Do you? I'd be interested to hear it. BTW the clock runs great, I'm still fine tuning it. Being in pieces for who knows how long; I suspect it will be a while before everything works smoothly.

It has been some time since phantom footsteps were overheard in our old pre Civil War house. At one time they were the most common occurance that seemed to manifest here. That these strange foot steps throughout this house at various times no longer occur (or hadn't in several months) kind of nullified the theories that it was the house settling or an effect of the heat or water systems. However, yesterday, we had another episode of phantom walking. Yesterday morning our dogs had me up bright and early. I have no idea why. But short of tossing them out a window I figured I might as well get up. So the two dogs and I went downstairs and I took them out for their morning necessities. Needless to say our exit from upstairs was not quiet and my wife was awakened by the commotion. So she was later coming downstairs. I had already brought the dogs in when my wife started down stairs. Still being rather wobbly on her feet, due to a long running leg problem, she needs the entire width of the rear stairs to navigate down. She said she started down but heard me coming up those rear stairs. The stairs turn about three quarters of the way up so she could hear someone coming up them but could not see around the turn in the stairs. She said she waited until the footsteps arrived at the turn in the stairs, but no one appeared. She said, "Are you coning on up or what?" and there was no answer then she could hear me downstairs talking to the dogs. She came on down and saw the stair gate was still up so what she heard wasn't the dogs or me. This is the first case of phantom footsteps in quite a while. So, of course, I wonder what she heard. Must have been pretty obvious for her to ask if I was going to come on up or not.

Once again my wife has experienced something paranormal. This morning she said right off the bat, "The Noah room is haunted". Keep in mind my wife has used the Noah room as a bed room for about a year. This was necessary because she has a leg problem that frequently needs attending to several times during the night. I questioned what she meant that the place is haunted. This is what she told me. "My leg was bothering me last night and I was just sitting up to do something about it when a movement caught my eye. When I looked to my right, I saw a child of three or four years, with long flowing light brown hair and dressed in an old fashion nightgown walk across the room, at the foot of the bed, and disappear out the bedroom door into the upstairs hall." She said she did not see the face and as young children in the deep past both genders wore such night gowns she couldn't determine the gender. She said, "I was fully awake and I tended my leg and then I went to the bathroom". We know the original owner of this house had several children. He was a United States Senator during the Civil War period. Perhaps it was one of his children. The dressing gown worn by the Spector would date it in the Victorian period up to the early years of the 1900's. My wife said she knew immediately what it was as she has seen "ghosts" before. Actually we both have but my wife has witnessed them more often than I. You see in books and such that ghosts strike terror into a person. That really isn't true. You see the phantom, you wonder what it is, you are curious; but the sightings are usually so short and sudden that you really have no time to be scared. We both think that such episodes are simply some past event being replayed by possibly the house or some exotic emotion or act experienced in the past. I have no idea of the science behind such an occurance; but you will believe it if once you see it.

Recently I recalled a paranormal episode that happened to me over 70 years ago. This episode has been recalled from time to time for all of these years. It occurred around 1943. I was so young at the time that my bed was still in my parents bedroom. About the time I started school my parents moved me into the bedroom with my brother. So I have a pretty fair idea when this episode occurred. The season was summer. I went to bed as usual but sometime during the night I was awakened by someone calling my name. I heard my name called at least twice as this is what woke me up. The voice was the quite familiar voice of the little girl that was staying with her aunt and uncle next door. It was the middle of the night and in my bedroom. Even as young as I was, I knew my younger playmate had no business wondering into our house. I remember saying, "What are you doing here?" and I got a cryptic message from her. I'll probably remember that message to my dying day; she said, "Mary says to get up at Moon". As she was saying this she moved closer to my bed and simply disappeared. Our conversation awakened my mother who wanted to know what was going on. I tried to tell her but she simply said, "You had a dream, go back to sleep." The next morning I was teased about the episode; especially by my older brother who had his own bedroom. My mother said ,"He had a dream about Donna Sue and was even talking for her. Whoa there. I definitely was not talking for Donna Sue and if it was only a dream how did my mother hear a two way conversation? Not long after the dream, Donna Sue's mother remarried and Donna Sue went back home to stay. Many years later I saw her wedding announcement in the local paper. Most dreams are quickly forgotten; yet that, if it was a dream, has never been forgotten, not even after over 70 years. If the dream had a meaning, I have no idea what it was.

If any of you recall, some time back I reported that I had set a spy camera up and recorded a few days of activities. In one of the shots I was surprised to see some long legged figure that I said had to be 8 to 10 ft. tall. Only the lower half the what ever was visible as the upper "body" was lost in darkness. Also you will recall, I had a friend with a much better computer that we thought might give us a better idea of what this long legged phenomena might be. If you recall when I tried to find the chip it was on...I couldn't. We looked for a blasted chip of and on for weeks. Pretty much turned the library inside out looking with no result. Well, the totally unexpected happened. I had just finished talking on the phone in the library when I noticed something laying in the center of the seat cushion of a woven rocker we have in sais library. Upon closer inspection I discovered it was the lost chip. Anyone care to tell me how this chip, laying apparently in plain sight, in the middle of the seat of a rocker that we walk past numerous times a day, got there or why we would not have discovered it long ago? That was only the first shock of the night. While I had the errant chip in my hot little fist, I called my friend with the supercomputer (super beside of mine, anyway) and asked if we could now check out this weird anomaly? They were gung ho, so getting in the car with the wife we ran over to the friend's house. We placed the chip in the slot and searched for the strange photo. It was nearly the last shot made. Right here we had what appeared like two very long legs, semi transparent, reaching way up the front stairs. It looked like long legs stretching up the stairs but the top of the figure was obscured by the darkness up the stairs. My friend brought the image way up and lighten it to see if more of the top was visible. Well, no, the top was still blanked out by darkness but we noticed something else coming up the staircase just to the left of the strange "legs". This object was wearing black or very dark trousers which explains why I didn't see it on my computer. Being somewhat shorter than the long legged anomaly, part of the upper section was now visible. That second figure turned out to be ME. At some point in time I had gone upstairs with this whatever beside me. Now that's a shock. I'm solid and walking up the steps on the left, next to the bannister. The anomaly with long legs is on my right, next to the wall. No matter how much we tried to lighten or enlarge the picture we still could not figure out what the strange form was. And to think I walked up stairs with it. My spy camera does not work anymore. I'd really like to find a new one. I think, perhaps, some interesting photos could still result.

I have a new motion activated camera. I have not installed it as yet. I still need to program it. Anyway when I get it working I'll place it where we got the other strange photo. I also plan to move it around the house from Attic to Basement. The old spy camera (that I have replaced) was also, supposedly motion activated. I had close to a thousand pictures on that camera yet only a couple dozen show any subject matter. So what??activated the camera? Of the couple of dozen shots that do show something that activated the camera, most were of me or my wife. There is no explanation for 900 or so empty shots. But I did get a half dozen rather strange shots including the "ghost on the steps".

Today I was catching up with some postings on my computer in the L:ibrary. One of my dogs was laying beside my chair and the other was on a pillow in the Dining room which is just off the Library and is adjacent to the downstairs short hall and Bath room which runs out of the kitchen. My wife was working in the kitchen when, she says, the little TV we have on the Kitchen mantle suddenly turned itself on. This TV is rarely used. Once in a while we turn it on to get the weather. We lost its remote months ago and have to manually turn it off and on. It is always set to the same station which we can get clearly. This automatically switched on TV happened once before several months ago. I'm not familiar with the workings of digital television sets. I am curious as to whatever might cause one of these sets to suddenly turn itself on. My wife says, half jokingly, "The Ghost did it". My spy camera is set up in the Parlour at present, aimed at the front hall and stairs. I wonder, if I had it in the kitchen, if anything unusual might have been recorded.

I have a question for anyone out there who knows a lot about digital cameras. I have a spy camera that I have set up in various places in this old house of mine. This camera is only supposed to operate if something comes into its view and range. The first spy camera I had took over 900 pictures. A few of these shots caught me or my wife walking in the camera's activation zone. However, the vast majority of shots (except for 5) shows nothing except the portion of the room the camera is aimed at. What, I need to know, activated the camera on all of those other shots? The new spy camera I set up last week has over 100 shots on it and again except for my wife or I activating it, we are getting plain pictures of our interior. What sort of motion, that cannot be seen, is activating my camera?

No one believes in ghosts until they, personally, experience one. I am going to attempt to send a picture of a ghost. We have ruled out all other possible explanations and so we are left with only the unexplainable. No one has ever climbed those front stairs with me or anyone else since we bought this house 36 years ago. The stairs are wide enough for two people but they are rarely used (We generally use the backstairs) and there has been no circumstances whereas two people would have gone upstairs together. Certainly not during the period the spy camera covered. The person on the stairs is me and I absolutely had no idea that I was going up those stairs with anything else. Nonetheless whatever it is was caught on three successive shots by the spy camera.

It seems that this thread will not take a picture. I tried to send one of a figure (of sorts) ascending our staircase but there is no way to send it through. I had no luck posting the picture on my blog site either. However I did get it on the Fortean Times Forum. So I guess I'm doing the right procedure its just that this site and my blog site must not accept pictures. If you are interested my blog site; I admit it is sometimes hard to get into; but if you wish to try, it is: brig-strangehauntedhistoricvillage.blogspot.com. I started the site in 2002 but the entries go back far longer than that.

I got my spy camera working again. Apparently where I had it posted was just too dark. I got a few photos but they were of the ceiling, and carpet so I guess the camera activated as I was placing it. So I have set it up in the same general area of the front staircase that gave us the "ghost" pictures last time. This time I left the entryway overhead light on. Now perhaps something will happen.

Now about old age and modern photography. I got the old spy camera working again. But blunders seem to be my forte. I was in the kitchen discussing where to set the spy camera up. As we were talking someone came to the door so I sat the spy camera on to of our gas range and went to answer the door. Long story short I forgot about the camera (I have CRS, or so it seems). A couple days later I was again talking to my wife in the kitchen, I noticed the spy camera. I got it and noticed the batteries were low. Well, I now have 12000 pictures of my wife working in the kitchen.

As for the Halloween pictures, Again I got nothing out of the ordinary. Trick or Trearers by the car load (roughly 500 of them) I took pictures of a few and also of the decorations I used around the front door. One strange thing did occur. My doorway decorations included A standee of Elvira holding a jack-o-lantern and my six foot talking skeleton butler on one side and a midget skeleton server and a Goblin with a service tray on the other side. I have two life size schnauzers also permanently on either side of the door. I shot photos of the doorway. Any way when I printed the pictures they all cam out crisp and clear except one. This one picture of the doorway came out of the machine all nice and clear and I laid it up the other others to properly dry. I printed a couple more shots that were just fine but when I laid them up I noticed the doorway picture was blurred, that is Elvira and the skeleton Butler on one side was very blurred and he two figures on the other side of the door were also blurred bad, yet the schnauzers between the two sides were perfectly clear, So I ran the negative back and tried again. The picture came out perfectly clear , but as I sat there I watched the same 4 figures blur and run. Makes no sense. I finished printing the pictures and decided to try one fore of the door decorations. This time I used the back of the print paper hoping it would be absorbant and prevent the colors from running. No such luck the same four figures came through just fine then blurred and ran. I have no logical explaination for this, none. All the other shots even of the front of the house came through crisp and clear.
